Real Estate Jobs: Agent vs. Salesperson vs. Broker
A real estate agent is a broad term for a licensed real estate professional that represents buyers and/or sellers in a real estate transaction. In general, a real estate agent helps people buy or sell houses, apartments, condominiums, land, commercial real estate, and other types of real estate properties. There are two basic types of real estate agents: real estate salespeople and real estate brokers. A real estate salesperson must qualify to take, and then pass, a real estate salesperson exam. Real estate salespeople must work under the guidance and supervision of a real estate broker. To become a real estate broker, a real estate salesperson must pass an additional exam that qualifies them to be a broker. A real estate broker is able to work independently and hire real estate salespeople.
Real estate salespeople and real estate brokers represent at least one party in a real estate transaction, and act as a Seller's Agent, Buyer's Agent, or Dual Agent if the salesperson or broker represents both sides of the real estate transaction.
You may have also heard of the term Realtor. A Realtor is a real estate salesperson or real estate broker that is a member of the National Association of Realtors (NAR). Whatever your path to a real estate career, the Study.com Real Estate School can help you succeed.
